WHAT KIND OF COCKROACHES ARE IN MY HOME?

IDENTIFYING COCKROACHES

American Roaches

American Roaches are one of the largest domestic roaches. The American Roach can be over two inches long and red brown. Adults have four wings and a pale yellow halo around the shield-like pronotum directly behind the head. They experience several stages of nymphs, vary in size and have similar appearances. American roach egg cases can be deposited in harborage areas, which are purse shaped and dark brown.  Found throughout the United States, both inside and outside structures, American Roaches favor moist areas and can be found in sewers. The long life cycle presence of nymphs can indicate a large infestation. Sometimes, when found in trees in the southeastern and western U.S., they are called a palmetto bug.

American Roaches like moisture and are usually found outside. They can get into the eave areas on some houses along soffits. American Roach problems harbor in mulch and tree holes outside and are usually only seen at night. Roach infestation can be found in any American city, however American cockroach problems are more common in institutional settings in the northern United States.

Look for: dead roaches, egg cases and droppings (droppings are similar in size to mice but have grooves on them and are squared off at the ends).

Brown Banded Roaches

The brown banded roach is a commonly found tan colored roach about ½ inch long when mature. It also has several nymphal stages which are smaller than the adults. Brown banded roaches are distinguished by the two brown bands across the body. It is similar in size to the German roach, but prefers dryer warmer areas. Brown banded roaches can infest structures and are often introduced through rented material, e.g., furniture and appliances.

These roaches also have a longer life cycle then the German roach. Populations build up slowly - slower than the German roach - but can be a widespread brown banded roach infestation. Egg cases are smaller than German roaches and are often “glued” to the underside of cabinets, drawers and other places they may be hiding. Look for brown banded roach infestations around furniture; behind pictures on walls; under cabinet drawers; or along edges of appliances, TVs and computers.

German Roaches

German roaches are small, tan, and approximately ½ inch long as adults, with two longitudinal black stripes on the back running the length of the body.. Adult German roaches have four wings. They have four or five smaller nymphal stages with no wings but with stripes. The eggs case is tan and elongated. They have a short life cycle and fast reproduction, so numbers can build up rapidly.

German roaches commonly infest structures. They can also be introduced with transport deliveries, or through infested materials. German cockroach infestations can occur in cracks and crevices in warmer moist or more humid areas of the room. Bathrooms and kitchens are usually the first area that German cockroach problems are seen but in many cases they can be found in bedrooms and other living areas. If German roach infestations are widespread, food sources are probably nearby. Look for antennae sticking out of cracks and crevices, droppings, fecal specks, cast skins, dead roaches, and egg capsules.

Areas where you have seen German roach problems; may include dishwashers, refrigerators, pantries, cabinet drawers (inside and underneath), under sinks.

Note: This is a significant structural pest. If live German roach problems are seen in the open areas - e.g. on walls, in corners or running on cabinets or counters – then the German roach infestation may be significantly large. In infestations like this there is often an odor associated with the German roach infestation.

Oriental Roaches

Oriental cockroaches are dark brown to black in color with poorly developed wings. Oriental roaches do not fly. Males and females are similar in size, about 1 inch or larger. These roaches have a long life cycle.

Oriental roaches commonly live in moist areas. It favors moist areas and is often called a water bug. Due to its long life cycle, the presence of nymphs would indicate a large Oriental roach infestation.

Smokybrown Roaches

Smokybrown roaches are large cockroaches and can be 2 inches long. They are commonly called a palmetto bug, and are more common in the southeast and along the Gulf Coast of the United States. Nymphs vary in size and are darker than the American roaches. The name denotes its color: a deep brown color.

The smokybrown roach is a large roach that generally lives outside, in crawl spaces and in or around structures in mulch and trees. Smokybrown roaches also have a long life cycle. Smokeybrown roaches like moisture. They can get into the eave areas on some houses along soffits.

Look for: dead roaches, egg cases and droppings (droppings are similar in size to mice but have grooves on them and are squared off at the ends).

Wood Roaches

The wood roach is found outdoors in many areas of the country. They often are brought indoors when firewood is brought in from outside. The adults differ in appearance, with the males having wings, allowing them to fly to lights. Females look similar to Oriental roaches but are much smaller. They do not generally infest structures. Wood roaches are often attracted to outside lights. Wood roaches do not breed indoors.

Pay particular attention to any insects flying into lights at night in the springtime of the year. Locate where insects may be coming from indoors.
